When asked why they do what they do, the speech therapists at Care First Rehab all said the same things.  Donna Richmond, CF Supervisor and Speech Therapist, shared,We find this career to be meaningful and challenging.  I enjoy the flexibility and independence due to the variety of work settings and patients.”

The Top 10 Aspects of Work

A survey conducted by BiLinguistics, Leaders in Cultural Diversity and Communication development, reported that speech therapists rank high in all 10 of the Top 10 aspects of work.

  1. Compensation/pay
  2. Flexibility to balance life and work
  3. Meaningfulness of Job
  4. Benefits: Health care, retirement, etc
  5. Type of clients/patients
  6. Challenging work
  7. Relationship with co-workers
  8. Administration’s support of my work
  9. Independence
  10. Variety of work setting

At Care First Rehab, there is tremendous diversity in job settings.  The In-Home Therapy option allows the speech therapist to meet the client where they live, work, or go to school.   Additional settings including acute hospitals, nursing home facilities, home health agencies, adult day care centers, and rehab hospitals.

In addition to having a variety of work settings, speech therapists also work with a diverse group of clients.  “No two clients, despite having the same diagnosis, are ever the same,” continues Donna.  This part of the job is challenging, but most speech therapists find this to be one of the best parts of the job.

Also, there are opportunities to interact with other medical professionals including physicians, neurologists, psychologists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists, dietitians and nurses.

Jillian Hicks, Speech Therapist at Care First, said, “The thing I appreciate the most is the ability to make a positive difference in the life of patient each and every day, whether it’s helping a client regain speech after a stroke or correcting a speech impediment.”

Those who enjoy the challenge of this profession will find it very rewarding.  The opportunity to continually learn and advance in your profession never ends.  The field of speech pathology is wide and ever changing and new research is constantly coming out.  Care First makes it a priority to stay current on best practices by attending conferences and continuously learning new treatment methods.
